The island wakes slowly. Torres Strait pigeons, rainbow lorikeets, and the distant call of the Spangled Drongo — all before 6am. Step onto your deck with coffee while mist lifts off the canopy.
Walk to the island's fringing reef at low water. Coral formations, fish, and the strange quiet of the Coral Sea at its most shallow. Snorkel gear is available from the island office.
Dunk Island has a network of graded walking tracks through national park. The summit trail reaches Mt Kootaloo — 271 metres — with panoramic views across the Coral Sea toward the mainland.
The island restaurant serves fresh Queensland seafood and tropical produce at dinner. Overnight guests are encouraged to book. Afterwards — back to your tent, with the stars above and nothing else.
