The experience

A day on
the island

Dunk Island is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area — a national park surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. There are no cars, no roads, and very few people.

Dawn
Bird calls before the day begins

The island wakes slowly. Torres Strait pigeons, rainbow lorikeets, and the distant call of the Spangled Drongo — all before 6am. Step onto your deck with coffee while mist lifts off the canopy.

Morning
The reef at low tide

Walk to the island's fringing reef at low water. Coral formations, fish, and the strange quiet of the Coral Sea at its most shallow. Snorkel gear is available from the island office.

Afternoon
The walking tracks

Dunk Island has a network of graded walking tracks through national park. The summit trail reaches Mt Kootaloo — 271 metres — with panoramic views across the Coral Sea toward the mainland.

Evening
Dinner under the palms

The island restaurant serves fresh Queensland seafood and tropical produce at dinner. Overnight guests are encouraged to book. Afterwards — back to your tent, with the stars above and nothing else.

No. When you book an eco tent stay, your return ferry from Mission Beach is included. Ferry seats are reserved as part of your accommodation booking — there is nothing extra to purchase. You will receive ferry details with your booking confirmation.

The eco tents are designed to immerse you in the island environment. Tents have ceiling fans and USB charging points. There are no mains power outlets, air conditioning, or television. The experience is intentionally off-grid — though not uncomfortable.

Linen and towels are provided. We recommend bringing: reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, casual clothing and a light layer for evenings, comfortable walking shoes, snorkel gear if you prefer your own (hire available on island), a reusable water bottle, and any medications. The island has no general store — bring anything you may need.

Yes. The island restaurant serves lunch and dinner, with a focus on Queensland seafood and tropical produce. Overnight guests are strongly encouraged to book in advance. Breakfast provisions are delivered to your tent as part of your stay package. There is no general store or takeaway on the island.

Eco tent check-in is from 14:00 (2pm). Check-out is by 10:00 (10am) on your departure day. You will need to take the 08:45 morning ferry from Mission Beach to arrive in time for island activities before check-in, or the 12:30 service which arrives in time for check-in. Your ferry seat is confirmed with your booking.

Yes, Dunk Island is well suited to families with children. The calm beaches and shallow reef areas are safe for swimming and snorkelling. The family eco tent sleeps four. Walking tracks are graded and manageable for older children and teenagers. Children under 3 travel free on the ferry.
