Updated March 20268 min readDay trips & overnight stays

Dunk Island sits just 4.5 kilometres off the coast of Mission Beach, yet it feels a world apart. Rainforest meets reef. No cars, no crowds, no traffic noise — just 730 hectares of national park with some of the best beach access in Far North Queensland. The only scheduled public service between the mainland and the island is the Dunk Island Ferry. This guide covers everything you need to know for your 2026 visit.

Getting to Clump Point Jetty

All Dunk Island Ferry departures leave from Clump Point Jetty — also signposted as Clump Point Marina — at the northern end of Mission Beach. The address is Clump Point Road, Mission Beach QLD 4852. From the Mission Beach town centre, it is a 5-minute drive or a 30-minute walk along the beach and foreshore path.

If you are driving from Cairns, Mission Beach is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes south on the Bruce Highway. Turn east at El Arish and follow the signs through Tully. From Townsville, allow around 2 hours 30 minutes heading north to the same turn-off. Free public parking is available at Clump Point Jetty for day trippers. Overnight guests can leave their car at Mission Beach Hideaway Holiday Village, 58–60 Porter Promenade, for $10 per night in their secure car park.

Ferry Schedule — 2026 Season

The Dunk Island Ferry operates Wednesday to Sunday throughout the 2026 season, with two daily departures from Mission Beach and two return services from the island. There are no Monday or Tuesday services.

The crossing takes around 15 minutes each way. If you take the midday service, your only return option is the 15:30 afternoon ferry, giving you roughly three hours on the island.

What It Costs — 2026 Fares

All tickets are return fares. There are no one-way options — the ferry operates as a return service. Current 2026 pricing is as follows.

Ticket TypeReturn Fare (AUD)
Adult (15 and over)$66.30
Child (3–15 years)$41.00
Family (2 adults + 2 children)$194.00

All fares are return and include the complimentary shuttle bus from Mission Beach. The family fare covers 2 adults and 2 children (aged 3–15). The pensioner/concession rate requires a valid Pension, DVA, or Senior card — have it ready at check-in. Pre-booking is essential — do not arrive at Clump Point Jetty without a confirmed booking. The ferry is a small vessel and regularly sells out, particularly on Saturdays and during Queensland school holiday periods.

The Free Shuttle Bus from Mission Beach

Included in every fare is a complimentary shuttle bus service operated by Mission Link, running from three pickup locations in Mission Beach directly to Clump Point Jetty. The shuttle is timed to connect with each departure.

What to Pack for a Day Trip

A day on Dunk Island is almost entirely outdoors. The island has a restaurant and bar, but no convenience store, so bring everything you need with you. Apply reef-safe sunscreen before you board — once you are in the water it is difficult to reapply effectively without washing it straight off.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (apply before boarding)
  • Water — minimum 2 litres per person for a full day
  • Swimmers and a towel
  • Snorkelling gear, or hire on the island
  • Walking shoes or trail sandals if you plan to hike
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Light rain jacket — weather can change quickly in FNQ
  • Cash or card for food and drinks at the resort
  • Underwater camera or waterproof phone case

What to Expect When You Arrive

The ferry docks at the Dunk Island jetty, a short walk from the beach and resort area. There are no cars on the island — everything is accessible on foot. The main beach sits directly in front of the resort and is the most popular spot for swimming and snorkelling. The reef close to the beach offers good visibility for snorkellers, with coral, reef fish, and if you are lucky, sea turtles.

The Dunk Island trail network covers around 13 kilometres of marked paths through tropical rainforest. The summit trail to Mount Kootaloo is the most popular, approximately 2.5 kilometres each way with an elevation gain of around 270 metres. It is a genuine workout in the heat but the views across the Coral Sea and back to the mainland are worth it. Allow 90 minutes return and bring water.

Day Trip or Overnight Stay?

A day trip on the morning ferry gives you approximately six hours on the island if you return on the 15:30 service. That is enough time to visit the main beach, snorkel, have lunch at the resort, and walk part of the trail network — but it does not leave much room to slow down. If you are travelling from Cairns or Townsville and the drive to Mission Beach takes two hours or more each way, a day trip makes for a very long travel day.

Overnight guests on the eco tent accommodation have the island largely to themselves in the early mornings and evenings after day trippers return to the mainland. The eco tents come in three configurations — standard jungle canopy, beachside with Coral Sea views, and family tents for up to four guests. A return ferry, breakfast provisions, and linen are all included in the booking. If waking up on a tropical island sounds more appealing than a long drive home, it is worth looking into.

Eco Tent Stays on Dunk Island

If a day trip isn't enough, Dunk Island offers glamping-style eco tent accommodation that lets you wake up on the island before the day trippers arrive. Three tent configurations are available — each designed to sit lightly in the landscape while keeping you comfortable.

Jungle Canopy Tent

Nestled in the rainforest edge with filtered light and birdsong. Twin or king configuration. Ideal for couples or solo travellers wanting full immersion in the island environment.

Beachside Tent

Positioned facing the Coral Sea with direct beach access and sunrise views across to the Barnard Islands. The most sought-after option — books out earliest.

Family Tent

Larger floor plan sleeping up to four guests. Two separate sleeping areas with a shared deck. Suitable for families with children or small groups travelling together.

All eco tent bookings include return ferry transfers from Mission Beach, breakfast provisions stocked in your tent, linen and towels, and exclusive access to the island in the early morning and evening once day trippers have returned to the mainland. There is no general store on the island, but the resort restaurant and bar are open during operating hours.
